Traceability Solutions Demonstrated to MAFRI

F.H. Black & Company conducted a seminar entitled "Solutions for the Food Industry" for the Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) Food Safety Analysts at the University of Manitoba in early November, 2009.

Jamie Black, Director of IT Services, and Ben Ferraro, Manager of Dynamics Services outlined many areas of concern to food processors and distributors respecting GMP, HACCP and traceability from a technical perspective.  Specifically, Jamie addressed issues key to the food industry such as traceability, product specification and batch yield monitoring, product costing, Certificate of Analysis and MSDS requirements. Encompassed in one very powerful solution, Ben demonstrated how Microsoft Dynamics GP can address all of these industry specific requirements as well as basic accounting requirements, inventory management, payroll and so much more.

The Food Safety Analysts from MAFRI were both excited and encouraged by the services and products presented as they directly addressed the needs of food processors.  As well, since F.H. Black & Company is located in Winnipeg, local support is always available.  As Microsoft Certified Gold Partners, F.H. Black & Company has a strong reputation for providing the highest level of service with specific expertise in the food processing & distribution industry.

Electronic T4 submission requirement

Starting in January 2010, filers who submit more than 50 T4’s to the CRA will be required to file electronically using the Internet.

How is this completed?

Filing electronically means sending your information returns to the CRA using the Internet. The CRA is increasing the size of file that they can accept from 20 megabytes to 150 megabytes. As a result, all filers will be able to send their information returns electronically.  Effective January 1, 2010, filers who previously filed more than 50 returns on paper, CD, DVD, or diskette must file over the Internet or they will be subject to penalties.

How do I prepare for the change?
  1. You should understand whether you payroll software can support electronic T4 creation.  If you are unsure, please contact us to find out.
  2. Ensure your payroll tax table updates are applied.  Contact us to schedule a time to complete this for you.
  3. Setup an ePass account with the CRA (if you do not already have one).  This is a user account which the CRA creates for the employee/business owner whom will be filing.  If an employee will be filing on behalf of the entire company the business owner must associate the employee as a representative of the company.
To setup an ePass account visit the following site: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/esrvc-srvce/tx/psssrvcs/bfr-eng.html

F.H. Black & Company Attends Food Safety Conference

Hosted by the Manitoba Food Producers Association (MFPA) and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI), the "Food Safety....It Matters" conference was a great success.

This was the second such conference and focused on, as you might have guessed, Food Safety. There were several great presentations. In particular, Dr. Ruby Lee's presentation "Prevention of Bacteria Hysteria via HACCP" was very interesting and useful for all food processors & distributors concerned with improving food safety.

Ben Ferraro, Susan Scott & Jamie Black of F.H. Black & Company attended the conference and spent most of the day discussing the role of technology in food safety programs with attendees. Specifically, we focused on explaining the Traceability solutions that we provide.

Sue and Ben also found that many of the attendees were very interested in how we could help implement and support Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) programs. Particularly, the ability to automate corrective action initiation and simplification of record management was of special importance to the attendees.

If you would like to discuss the role of technology in food safety and how it can save your food processing or distribution business money, please contact us.
